British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
